At LAS, we believe that education reaches far beyond academic excellence. Education also incorporates the individual development of ethics, morals and pride. Students share their experiences with other students from over 50 nations, each with their own rich cultures, languages and beliefs. Living and working together on the “Magic Mountain,” our students widen their previous views to a true international outlook, where personal achievement is tied closely to a sense of global responsibility. With this in mind, in August 2016, LAS is introducing grade 7 and establishing a middle school with grades 7 & 8.
We offer a strong residential program similar to those we have for all of our students with additional scheduled events and supervision. We understand that our youngest students benefit from careful supervision to fully integrate into the LAS family. Middle school students will have extra levels of care such as mandatory breakfast and dinner check-ins, mandatory Friday and Saturday excursions and a supervised ski program in the winter.
The LAS middle school prepares young students for an International high school experience. Classes combine essential content (reading, writing, math and science) with essential skills (critical thinking, forming an individual opinion, working in groups and sharing ideas with others).
Unique in the middle school are the transdisciplinary courses called Academic Exploration. For periods of 6 to 8 weeks - one marking period - students immerse themselves in the introduction or expansion of innovative content and skills. For example, students learn the skill of typing without looking at their fingers - a critical academic skill. They are also introduced to computer programming, which is important content in today’s world. In DIY (do it yourself) language, students practice the skill of learning world languages by constructing a small language of their own. Their work provides an introduction to the content of linguistics.
Middle school students who work hard will be prepared for grade 9 at LAS. We’re looking forward to their future success!
