What makes the new LAS middle school unique?

A year-and-a-half ago we were presented with the opportunity to create a new middle school where students could get ready for high school with the help of a unique mix of traditional and innovative educational techniques. My colleague Patti Cooper and I - along with nearly 30 of our colleagues – accepted the challenge and created a supportive and unique learning environment in which our middle school students explore their individual talents, develop good habits of reading and writing, practice analysis, reasoning and healthy living.

A new era for sports at Leysin American School

Today saw the official opening of the “Magic Mountain Athletics Center” at Leysin American School in Switzerland. This multi-purpose state of the art sports facility provides a wide range of sports options for LAS students and replaces the “Goathouse,” the former sports hall at LAS.

LAS Founder, Sigrid Ott, celebrates her 100th birthday!

Born in Upham, North Dakota in 1916, Sigrid Ott grew up on the family farm speaking Icelandic as well as English. While enrolled at the University of North Dakota, she met her future husband Fred Ott, whom she married after graduating with a degree in sociology in 1938.

8 Lessons From IB

Thank goodness it's over.

As IB (International Baccalaureate) scores have just recently been released. All the open-minded, caring, balanced, reflective, knowledgeable, principled, communicative, inquisitive thinkers and risk-takers out there are relieved (to say the least) that it is all over. Despite the long nights, extra caffeine, excessive past papers, Internal Assessments, oh and don't forget those convoluted knowledge questions, we must have learned something.
